The BIG three.........
Besides The Frodsham there are 2 other companion books:
1. Arnold
2. Dent
These are highly informative large, thick books with great photos.
They are pricy, esp the Arnold but if you hunt one can buy one or all very reasonable.
These are a must for the English watch collector. |

A book that I do have is Watches 1850 - 1889 by M Cutmore and that is quite good, but not so good as the American books.
I think the English scene was far less organised than the American watch industry. In England, everyone did their own thing and few people would have had the whole picture. In many ways, that makes for variety and interest but it is hopeless for the collectors of today who might want to find a replacement case or a spare part. |
John, I believe you mean 1850-1980?
There is also another M Cutmore book, The Pocket Watch Handbook, pub 1985.
I recommend both of these books. |

Ray is quite right--on about the Henry B Fried* book; master watchmaker and mechanic, Bill Tapp, always highly recommended this book!
Jon
*About 4 years or so before I moved East I attended a dinner & horological talk in Bedford, Massachusetts featuring Henry Fried. This was quite a gathering of over 200 people inc. many Chapter 8 members for a sit down dinner. A packed gathering with many if the attendees in sport coats. MY GOODNESS, HOW TIMES HAVE CHANGED! |

Jon, you are perfectly correct about the title of the Cutmore book, it should be 1850 to 1980. Not sure how that happened.
I do have Henry Fried's books and another good one is de Carne, of course. There are also others, that I have, on watchmaking. The information that I lack is definitive identification data and manufacturer history for the more "modern" English watches. Cutmore may be as good as it gets, perhaps. |

Yes, de Carle. I find my computer changes things! I also do have Chamberlain, by the way. |
