I suppose a few members here have been wondering who the fool was that paid so much for the Arnold in the recent J & H Auction. Well, I found out it was me and am I glad I purchased it. I have wanted a chronometer example by Arnold for a long time and apparently I wasn't going to let this one get away. I thought at first that I would re-case it back to a proper period case until I and my good friend John Huber got to look at it. Turns out the case was purpose made and very high grade. I am going to leave it alone as a preservation of its provenance. The movement has never been on the receiving end of a bad repairman and is basically original and in beautiful condition. Having been serviced recently it keeps time within a few seconds over a 24 hour period. The owners of this watch over the past 215 years must have truly prized it and depended on it.
So I thought it might please the watch to have a nice home to set in while it is in my possession. Here is a box I made since the Auction.

Thanks everyone, these small boxes are fun to build but require a lot of time. Especially the ones I inlay all the corner brass. I just finished 9 of them for someone and he has requested 10 more.

I dont think you overpaid, Paul. When it sold I thought that was the right price for that watch.
For all you know it looks like the case may have been nicer than the original!
I love English Chronometers - I think if I ever run out of Wallies to find, these would be the next category I would like to pursue.
