Hi, after a period of time; I have been very busy and a stay in Hospital, I am back Posting. Hi, I paid the most that I have ever paid for a movement for this one. "William Holland, Maker to the admiralty' No.3760".
Sellers Description: “Excellent quality keyless freesprung centre seconds going barrel pocket watch movement with “Kew A certificationâ€, signed. W Holland, Rock Ferry & Birkenhead No.3670.
Large 49mm keyless three-quarter plate frame stamped 20 and numbered in 3 places, lever escapement with double roller jewelled to the 3rd wheel. Cut compensation balance with gold timing screws, complete set of blued steel hands that appear to be original. William Holland, Rock Ferry & Birkenhead, Liverpool. 1861 Census record for William, (from the Liverpool Museum site):
Name Holland William
Date 1861 - 1865
Town Birkenhead
Directory Street directory
Street 1 2 Fairfield View, Well Lane, Rock Ferry
Town Birkenhead
Trade Watchmaker
Additional Information:
Information 1861 census - watchmaker aged 26 of Well Lane, Tranmere. Eliza aged 26 + 2 - Jane Elizabeth aged 3 + William Torry aged 1
By 1894, (Kelly's directory), William had two establishments at 69 Bedford Place, Rock Ferry, and 36 Argyle Street, Birkenhead, and by 1900 a third, at The Albany, 6 Old Hall Street.
Later, in the Gore's 1900 directory, there's a William T. Holland, watchmaker, listed at 193 Bedford Road, Rock Ferry, and this may well be William's son William Torry, who would then have been 40. I found that Holland I mentioned that was sold at Fellows (in January 2010). It was estimated at £900-1300 and sold for £2000. I recall that there was a contest between a telephone bidder and a guy in the room who attended just for that watch. I also vaguely recall that there was discussion in the room about the telephone bidder being a museum. “Robert & Judith Armstrong

Hi everyone, I'm hoping to find information or connections to 2 families who moved to the Wirral from Gainsborough, Lincolnshire. The first is that of my Gt Gt Grandfather William HOLLAND. He was born in 1835 and died in Rock Ferry in 1910. He was a watch manufacturer. Several of his sons followed him into the business and some went into the optician/opthalmetry business. I believe there was a family run company right up until the 1960's in the area. I would love to hear from anyone with any memories or info on this company. William and his wife Eliza TORRY had 12 children who all married. They were: ...... 2 Jane Elizabeth Holland b: 08 December 1857 in Tranmere, Cheshire d: 30 March 1927 in Hornsea, E Yorks Burial: Hornsea, E Yorks .+Harry Short Henderson b: 01 September 1861 in Wrawby, Lincs Baptism: 27 October 1861 m: 17 November 1885 in Birkenhead d: 27 September 1945 in Hornsea, E Yorks Burial: Hornsea, E Yorks ...... 2 William Torry Holland b: 1860 d: Aft. 1922
