Hi, I had a reply from my Watchmaker friend: "Hi Ray,
The hole was drilled using a tiny splinter of diamond, ('bort'), cemented into the end of a brass rod, before being polished with copper pins and rotating laps charged with diamond dust. The slit was made with a thin copper or iron disc, (a 'skive'), again charged with diamond dust. Jewelling specialists made their own diamond fragments and dust by crushing low-grade 'industrial' diamonds in a heavy steel mortar and then settling out the various sizes of fragments and particles in olive oil. This all required very high levels of skill and patience.
This was all long before the advent of synthetic ruby.

These ruby duplexes can be cut by laser. Problem today would be the set up time - it all has to be entered on computer by someone who knows code AND watches, a rare combination indeed! |
