Hi, as a buyer of the strange and unusual, I purchased this incomplete movement. I will make the parts that are missing. Does anyone know anything about this maker? Seller’s description: "A large going barrel pocket watch movement by this most interesting London retailer c1820. Full plate movement now with lever escapement most likely converted from cylinder/duplex. Brightly gilded top plate engraved VINER, ‘Inventor’ New Bond Street & Royal Exchange London 1866. The pillar plate fitted with a form of Joseph Berrolas Patent pull-wind mechanism, Viner's adjustment appears to be the use of a push rod rather than a chain to work the mechanism making it more robust, the disadvantage of this was the push rod then has to be manually reset to its original position after each pump. Brightly gilded top plate engraved VINER, ‘Inventor’ New Bond Street & Royal Exchange London 1866.â€
The photo of Dial is a photo that I found on the net. It would appear that Charles Edward Viner was a little more than a retailer! In Baillie he is listed as follows:
VINER Charles Edward. London. Apprenticed 1802. Elected Clockmaker's Company (CC) 1813. Liveryman of CC - 1819 to 1840. alarm watch with duplex movement and pump winding cylinder movement in the Guildhall Museum (CC Museum). 2 watches in the Science Museum, Kensington, London. Repeater, alarm, ruby cylinder in the Dennison Collection.
additionally, in Britten (7th Edition):
151 New Bond Street and Royal Exchange. Charles Edward Viner & Hopkins (or Hoskins) Sweeting's Alley, 1829 also 235 Regents Street.
So, a maker of some repute and a nice piece of horological history too. I would suggest that the 1866 is a serial number rather than a date and it is very likely, if as is indicated this was converted from a cylinder to lever, that the size of the balance would, necessarily, be reduced. I am in the process of making Parts and fitting into a Case. Regards Ray |

Hi, I would like to state that unlike American Machine made Pocket Watch movements, every part of a Verge Fusee, Fusee et al. is not made to a standard and will not unless you are very lucky fit into another movement so you are left with no alternative but to design and make the required part. Regards Ray |

Indeed, all English mov'ts are a challange to recase as nothing ever fits.
Americans are reatively easy for standard sizes andtht is why one sees so, so many switches and recased watches. The only two issues can be stem types and lever slots on American.
The English did a very good thing--having serials on dials and movements on many watches like Arnold, etc. This makes it tough on switchers and fakers. Note: very few Americans have matchng case and mov't serials.
