That is his correct name - Dennis Kaye. The brain is getting scrambled!
Dennis Nichinson now works as the Watch director for one of the west Coast AH's.
So yes, this dial was his work. |

If you watched that dial making video there is not that much specialized equipment involved.
Most of it was hand work. You need an oven. You need to source the enamel.
Some kind of press tool to punch out the copper blanks, again not hard.
The printing transfer device would not be difficult to make.
The key part is the engraved block where that big rubber plug picks up the paint from.
I suspect in the old days that would have been hand engraved and there is the skill BUT these days we have computers and cnc engraving machines and like I said before those things are getting better and cheaper by leaps and bounds.
I know for a fact that there is a local club into all things cnc and they go so far as to build their own engraving machines because the bought ones are not good enough for what they want to do. yet
These are the kind of blokes that would make something like this, not for profit, but rather more as a challenge to see if they could do it.
Time will tell I suppose but I don't think this is something we can afford to ignore.
We need a system to authenticate watches. |

I do not have a "before" photo, as this was in 2003 before cell phone cameras and I was not yet a member of 149.
There was a big Bullseye between the 7 and 8 where the dial foot was located. and a whole mess of hairlines radiating from that location. But part of the 8 was missing.
I thought how the heck did he replicate the "8". It didn't look drawn in, but the dial is enamel - its not plastic or a decal.
I thought he did a great job based on what was there previously. |

They are projecting gold to reach $2,000 an ounce this Fall. IF that happens you can kiss this hobby good bye! |

I am saying it is out there and it keeps getting better and cheaper.

Perhaps we should proceed like they do with elephants and rino.
Cut the tusks off now so there is nothing for the poachers to go after.
You end up with tusk less animals but at least they are alive.
I hope that won't be necessary and I like to think that there are enough true collectors out there that they will resist the temptation to scrap all their gold cases.
But I do think we need to look to the future and prepare for it rather than sit around wishing for the good old days to return.
That ain't going to happen. |

All you guys could pull a Paul Chamberlain as he did after 1928--buy rare movements from the dealers after they scrapped the gold cases, and then make cases of your choice. Chamberlain cases are nice! |
