I have been so damned busy with my "real job" lately that I have not had any time at all to pay attention to watches or watch stuff. Our business is booming and anyone who has been in capital equipment sales knows that life is easy until you sell something and if you sell a lot...which is the goal...life is good but it ain't easy.

Anyway, as any true watch nerd knows, when you stay away from watches for any amount of time life is also not good. So, when a gold buyer I know called me and asked me to come out to his place to help him try to buy a collection of 100+ RR watches I said sure. It was an above average collection and I told him what I thought he should pay and what I thought he might net on The Bay. For my troubles I got to buy a few of the un-important items which appealed to me at a pretty good price. This amounted to:

1) An NOS J-Boss RR case
2) A really nice J-Boss RR case
3) An NOS Star RR case
4) An NOS Hamilton RR case
5) A nice Illinois 5th Pinion Grade 106 in a nice 5+ Oz Coin case
6) An 18s Ball 999B Marcy Special marked on the dial and movement

The prize was the Marcy. The hands are wrong but overall it is nice and now I have both the gr 938 and the 999B versions of the Marcy. When I get time to clean it up and take pix I will post some more.

I am looking forward to retirement in a few months and to getting out into the watch world again.

Sincerely,

Your long lost but hopefully not forgotten friend, Little Johnny

Thanks Geno. The weirdest thing is that when the dude called me, he said there were some Ball watches in the group. I asked if there were any 18s and he said that almost everything was 16...then he hesitated and said that he remembered that there was one older Ball with an earlier serial number and funny markings. I had a premonition that was a Marcy...after all, it was an Indianapolis collection. I didn't want to make a big deal out of it and the old Ball was one of the last watches I looked at....and there it was.

When I get it cleaned up I will shoot a pic and put the 999 and the 938 side by side. The new one is not ever going to look as nice as the old one. The new one...the 999 is in the 13,000 sn range.

I must really be in need of a little escape into watchdom. Here is the 999B Marcy for comparison. It is in its DIF (dirty as FUc#) as found state. I actually think there is not much about the movement which won't clean up pretty well. I still don't think it will ever be a GOTFW like the 938 but after a close look there are no huge scratches and most of the schmutz looks like years spent in a smoky room or steam tender. The case could be original. It does have a dent but overall not too bad.

It is marked a bit differently as you can see but it still seems to have the polished surface around the balance jewel like the typical 938.

Like I said, common but nice RRs. From BS and Ham 950 to lower grade. No great Wallies.

Very interesting watch- I have never seen or read about the Marcy before. I have not seen too many private label Ball watches.
Thanks for showing it.
Scott

Nothing lucky except that the Ball turned out to be a Marcy. My role in the whole thing was to tell my friend the gold buyer what I thought he could reasonably get for the watches on eBay and what I thought I would want to pay if I were buying them. I have no time right now to deal with a hundred watches.

Scott,

There are some nice PL Balls. They were made for the Ball agents. I think Ben has the one from Louisville. None of them are very common. I know where there is a consecutive serial number to my 938...but it is missing the dial.

Here is a link to a page by Bill Kapp which tells a bit about Ball PL production.
