So...I guess future editions of the Complete Guide are only going to have a wristwatch section...no more pocket watches. Is the market that bad?

No, the cost to produce and ship the FAT book was part of the reason plus sales have dropped comparable to the assoc. memberships, only WORSE, reportedly down to 6K and a losing venture for the owners.

Plus, never any changes or realistic values; and where was the updated info EVER from poor research repeated year after year!

People would have bought it if they kept it up to date.
They were not even much interested on correcting errors.
There is more to a new addition than a flash new cover and upping the prices x % across the board.
Most can do that from the old edition.

Collectors and dealers are focusing less and less on the fake prices and so-callled star system of rarity of the guide that was very abused. Right now the 4 D's of Debt, Divorce, Death and especially the last one one Disinterest have a big impact. Many collectors are burnt out and or washed up. Just because something seems cheap to buy doesn't mean you can resell. Comps are almost useless, depending on the venue which for right now Ebay is the best. Unfortunatley, right now really good watches are hard to find on Ebay among the ocean of crap. Geno

I agree completely Geno. Still a good time to buy good watches but even with what Jon accurately says about the cost to print etc it was a shock to me. The real puzzler is that the wrist watch part of the book is worse in all ways than the pocket watch part. It is way out of date...not even close to complete and has not had its prices updated for years. Nobody with a lick of sense will buy it.

It is very simple--the WW book is smaller and cheaper to print and ship.

Of course, they will eventually realize that this is also out of touch and a loser.

How long did it take them to realize the valueless FAT BOOK?

Those folks that created the book were dealers and not horologists-htis was their downfall. They desperately needed a true expert in the mix of authors.

They milked it for all it was worth. The wrist watch part is horrid. They seem to have stolen Roy's Hamilton ww work. Nobody give a crap about most American ww's. The Swiss sections are crap. The Rolex section is completely out of date and even if it was updated every year it would be out of date in a couple of weeks. The Heuer section is so incomplete as to be a complete joke. There are Heuer prices that are 1/20th of reality.

THE BOOK has sucked for years and I doubt it will have many more.

The Swiss WW market has matured to the point where each brand is its own category.

I doubt a price guide would ever adequately give an overview of the Swiss WW market.

Not only that, watches that were popular 20-30 years ago like the bubblebacks and the manual winds, have relegated to a niche market like the Pockets.

It was something that was going to happen no matter what.

But something Geno said disturbed me. He said many collectors are just "burned out".

Its something I feel sometimes but that is more to the negativity surrounding the hobby and also to the dwindling group of people to share the experience with.

The best thing they could do with the first half of the book is remove the prices and make it into some kind of a text book that accurately tells people what is out there and how many.

Even that would take a few editions to get right but at least it would be dealing with facts and if done properly it could become something useful.

You could never cover all the variations but it would be a good start and might actually help new collectors.
