I am writing a presentation on watch manufacturing in the state of Illinois. Illinois seems to have had more companies which actually manufactured watches and more actual watch production than any other state. Some of these companies were pretty darned small but is there any other state that comes close.

THE WATCH COMPANIES OF ILLINOIS

Company Names and Approximate Production:

Aurora Watch Co, Aurora, IL, 1883-1892, 220,000
Cornell Watch Co, Chicago, IL, 1870-1875 12,000 (Chicago only)
Elgin (National Watch Co), Elgin, IL 1864-1964 55,000,000
Freeport Watch Co, Freeport, IL, 1874-1875 300
Chicago Self Winding Watch Co, 1883-1895 35
Illinois Watch Company, Springfield, IL 1869-1927 5,000,000
Kankakee/McIntyre Watch Co, 1900-1911 Very few
Kelly Watch Co, Chicago, IL, 1900 Very few
Peoria Watch Co, Peoria, IL, 1885-1895 47,000
Rockford Watch Co, Rockford, IL, 1873-1915 1,000,000

OK, I did a quick recount and I can come up with an even dozen (12) watch companies in Mass. If you count all of New England there are a lot more. I still think that as far as overall production numbers...just because of the Elgin number...there were more watches made in Illinois...by quite a few?

Luther Goddard

The watch companies of Mass:

Howard Davis and Dennison

Warren Mfg

Tracy Baker and Co.

Howard and Rice

Boston Watch Co.Appleton Tracy

American Watch Co PLUS the various name changes

E Howard and Co., Boston

G P Reed

E Howard Watch Co. (Keystone), Waltham

Tremont Watch Co.

Melrose Watch Co.

Springfield Watch Co., Ma

Auburndale Watch Co.

DD Palmer Watch Co.

US Watch Co of Waltham

PLUS, SOME OF THE SMALLER SIZE

More companies but certainly less production totals with Elgin's leading productions.

John C., I believe Ingersoll was also in Rockford or they at least had a building there if the same folks that made dollar watches. Still standing today. There were also some watch case companies in Ill too if that means anything.

Jon,

I am not disputing your list...but I counted all of the American Watch Company related entities as one company. I suppose in Illinois if I did it your way I would count both the National Watch Company and the Elgin National Watch Company. I would count the Springfield Watch Company as well as the Illinois Watch Company etc. I would make Kankakee and McIntyre different companies...

I realize the the Waltham antecedents are a little different but maybe not that different. I will admit that perhaps Mass had a few more...but not a lot more. Cool

The Mass American companies were partially in diff towns (Boston & Waltham) and were incorporated separately.

NOTE: that I did not include the many name changes of E Howard and American Watch Co. of which there are many, possibly 13 -15 more!

There is no question that you are correct that there were more...and I have learned a lot for the presentation I am working on.
