Collectors do not need the club to buy and sell or read books at the library.

Outside places to buy and sell and learn clocks and watches are everywhere on the internet.

I think it is hopeless unless great changes are made.

Quite honestly, the nawcc might be better off as a horological society if the marts/attendance/interest continue to drop as they have.

As stated by many others, collectors are going elsewhere to buy what they collect. This has been a trend for quite a few years. Also, haven't the poor marts strongly attributed to the crash in nawcc membership? This proves that a huge percentage of members over the years were members simply to buy, sell and trade. Sad but true--MONEY WINS, as usual.

This is an interesting point. If the NAWCC is fundamentally a protected trade group, it has outlived its purpose.

If the NAWCC serves a more fundamental purpose, such as preservation of horology, its purpose can survive (albeit in a smaller form) as long as there are people who care about the mission.

To the extent that their credibility with regard to the more fundamental mission is weakened by the stances they take to protect their trade group members, they undermine the option of retaining any long term relevance.

The longer the decrease in membership continues, possibly the "model" changes. Maybe the new mission is moving towards museum studies, research, conservation? THEN, we shall separate the traders from the true watch and clock lovers. If the traders need their venue, there is always the IJWG and WWT!

You don't have to be one or the other you can be both, but if it gets to be no marts and just symposiums, this 42 year member would be out. Geno

I always wondered why there wasn't a level of membership for traders.

Perhaps even a few marts just for them.

There may be other things a trader needs that a regular member does not.

Most of the Marts are for the Traders now. Very few walk-ins.

As the goods leave the marts so have the traders. Exclamation

Prices are generally on a downward slope in this market with many confusing cross currents, this drives a lot of the weak hands out as fear takes hold. However there are buys to be had depending on the depth of your knowledge. The ability to work close is a huge factor as many won't buy unless they can rip something. These guys have a very hard time in this type of market. I've seen them come and I've seen them go and many will quit. I am referring to the hip pocket trader, there used to be many. The hardcore collector and dealer survives no matter what the economy is, has they have the patience, knowledge and money to survive. The best advice is to stay hungry and buy the things you like. The above is a huge reason why we have dwindling marts and membership. Geno

Many "light weight" dealers try to work close and get "killed!"

Demand is King.

You can have all the knowledge in the world but if you are one of only a select few who has it you are not much better off.

People can't lust after things they don't know about.

There was a great quote I saw recently on the TV about a supposedly very good music album published by a pretty famous band.

" One of the best albums know body knows about "

Nope, sorry, Knowledge is King--especially as knowledge covers many areas such as (but not limited to) rarity, condition, originality, escapements, attachments, case content and metal, patents, value and demand. Idea Laughing
