For the last couple of years the Victorian Government has embarked on an extensive program of rail crossing removal.
Sometimes the rail is dropped below the road and other time the rail is raised above it and we get "skyrail"

There is a bit of controversy about that at times from the troublesome 2% but the work keeps going.

This has created a lot of used materials and the government has been donating some of that to the preserved rail groups.

One of those is the Goldfields group who operate the line from Castlemaine to Malden.

Thus experiences like that shown below should be available for a long time to come.

I would have enjoyed having a run here.
Alas the place is no more.
A pity
Someone put in a lot of work to build it.

Here is something unique to Ballarat. A Jelbart Roller

Jelbart were a Ballarat company who built 2 stroke oil engines and tractors.

Nothing sounds the same.

This roller was one of their bigger machines. It must have kept the neighbor hood well awake when it was rolling the road in Ballarat given how good they were at growing hills in that part of the world.

Here is another Puffing Billy clip.

Taken at the best time. The middle of winter.

The sound travels for miles through the hills.

Make sure you wear a coat.

That whole area is a fantastic location to visit. We go there often as it is only 30 min away. Full of interesting places to visit. Can get very busy on the weekends.
