Hi John -

I made the time to read your newsletter today. To cut back staff by 40% is a big deal, IMO.

Can you share the current membership number? Is it holding steady or still dropping?

I dont know if you pay attention to AWCI, but ever since Rolex dropped the membership requirement, their numbers are in free fall. I think they are dropping below 1,000. At one time they were almost 30,000 members.

I think it is time to approach them for a merger. for 2 good reasons:

They have LOTS of money.

They have the technical expertise, that is now (unfortunately) predominately geared towards clocks and vintage watches. The Swiss watch industry has pretty much abandoned the American Watch Repair Industry. Their new business model is evolving towards the consumer dealing with them directly, for sales AND service.

I know before they turned their noses up at the idea, but now I think both parties will take it more seriously.

Neil,

Our numbers are holding steady at 11,000 and change with slight decreases this year and last. I am fearful that this plague will cause numbers to drop. That's why I asked people to make sure to renew.

We have been talking to AWCI for a while. In the past there has been sort of an anti AWCI prejudice at the NAWCC and it carries over still today for a small minority in our organization. There was a small faction of the organizers of last year's National who kept the AWCI education bus from setting up at the National. The board found out about this too late. I think it is/was going to happen a this year's National if it happens at all.

I think there is a natural synergy. I also think there is some feeling at AWCI that the NAWCC is just after the money. Who wouldn't think that. I think we are both after stability. We actually get along very well these days in my opinion.

Then all the better reason to pursue it more aggressively. Dont wait until it is too late for both groups!
