| Pocket watch prices for many items seem to be firming up, especially at some auctions; caseless movements of fine quality and eye appeal are currently very strong on Ebay sales; gold is mostly scrap unless GOTFW; and Hamiltons getting weaker as a massive amount are and will be hitting the market in 2020! |

Some hoarders of various American watches have either stopped collecting, sold out or passed away. Most major hoards and expensive collections are now going by the way of major auction house venues such as Sotheby's, Christies, Bonhams or Heritage. NY, London and maybe Hong Kong (?) offer the strongest buyers. However, it is getting tougher to buy good deals because of originality issues/bad repairs, and poor quality/more common watches bring too much and rarer or expensive go cheaper ALL DUE TO LACK OF KNOWLEDGE or sophistication!
No matter what auction you favor, they continue to be a mixed bag. |

There is good reason for some falling PW values--here are a few no one understands or knows about re values. When auction houses DUMP huge amounts of certain items rather then spreading the consignment out over a year or more period prices will soften; prices will soften when newbies do not understand what they are buying AND their lack of knowledge of rarity, originality and condition issues. Newbies for years have plunged into supposedly "rare" items even buying dups and triplicates only to discover more causing other newbies to back off from fear of paying too much.
THe bottom line is LACK OF KNOWLEDGE & IGNORANCE about what they are doing. |

Does anybody know the average span of a PW collector?
Meaning how long do they stay in the hobby on average before they give up, or lost interest or get pissed off?
it seems like there are only 2 groups, those that have been doing this 25+ years and those doing this for 5-10 years or less.
What bother me is the turnover of watches, when they go through maybe 3-4 owners in 10 years, that can't be good for them.
Any thoughts on that? |

In no order, Neil, here are some reasons.................................
The short time players are usually speculators or investors who make a splash with either a certain amt of dollars designated, get bored, or turn to something else. Take a guy like Ray ordermont--he died before he could do any more damage to his wallet.
Long time players are ones who generally began as school boys or have collecting in their blood and like mechsnicsl things. others may be older folks with money who disovered the hobby later in life.
I have known collectors who quit because better watches were too expensive for their wallets or these people didn't want to spend time to hunt or spend for better watches. |

Another question to ask is how many times a new player can get screwed before he cries " ENOUGH " and goes to find a new interest.
Or perhaps it takes a certain amount of time for a new guy to realise what is being done to him and once he catches on he sees things in a new light from which it is hard to recover.
It's a bit like running a business.
It doesn't take many bad reviews to make your life difficult and often times people don't tell you they are not happy. They just don't come back. |

I don't think cash has that much to do with it. You only have to look at how much cash some people spend to follow their particular passion.
It is more about what you get from the experience.
If you feel you made a wise choice, gained something or learnt something the experience becomes a good one that you want to repeat.
If however you feel you were got at, for whatever reason then you are less likely to want to repeat the experience.
People like to feel like they belong to something. They want to be more than just a bunch of customers to be used to buy up the junk the experienced guys don't want or milked for cash to prop up a dying national body. |
