What are some of your best EVER "TAKEN A SHOT" ON A WATDH WITHOUT AN IDEA WHAT IT WAS BEFORE THE PURCHASE?

(Some could be horrendous, i.e open the back cover and it is all rusted!)

This goes back a long time ago but does fit the category though it is a clock (firewood).
I bought a cardboard box of clock parts painted white that appeared to be an early Boston banjo for $20 at a flea market. When I got home I started putting what was there together and found I had purchased a complete Simon Willard "Brides" model banjo that someone had taken apart without damaging anything. At the time, these were serious money. I actually know where that clock is to this day.
Paul
PS: These Brides Model banjo's were originally painted white and were considered an appropriate gift to a new bride around 1805. This one was 100% when I put it back together. They were in the $15K + arena back in the 80's.

At a coin show maybe 30 yrs ago I bought a pile of watches from Calif coin dealer, all cheapies. Then there was this decent 18s silver SW HC watch which had a KW mov't in it but the case wouldn't open (dial side). At $35. I decided to take a shot. After paying for it I got the case open and WHAT A SURPRISE--a RED APPLETON TRACY & CO. dial!

SCORE
