In the 1930s Dr. William H. Sheldon devised a "scale for rarity" used universally. It was published in "Early American Cents", 1949, as follows:

R-1 common
R-2 not so common
R-3 scarce
R-4 very scarce (population estimated at 76-200)
R-5 rare (31-75)
R-6 very rare (13-30)
R-7 extremely rare (4-12)
R-8 unique (1); semi unique (2); three known (3)

Watches, like counted rare Large and Half cents are counted.

Unique is one known (or made); Extremely rare (4-12), 5 known would be a high R-7, etc.

I use this scale to rate rarity, always have and always will. My recently sold dial reflects this as R-5 (it is in fact probably rarer.) It is not only rude and unethical to rant about my Hamden dial rarity but incorrect as to my definitions. I am consistent only rarity. The Sheldon rarity guide is a great scale to use.
