I wasn't thinking about the dealers with this comment.

And I don't go to the meetings anymore, but I was thinking back when I did go, the only people that would talk about the watches were the dealers. As you stated those collectors, did not talk much about the watches as I guess for the reason you suggested. Many of them had already stopped going to the marts by the time I became active, because as Geno pointed out, the good stuff had already dried up.

I am always hearing about this person and that person whom I never met, that would have been nice to learn a thing or 2 about these watches.

The good stuff has been dried for 10-15 years--what else is new? Why do you think I stopped attending all marts over a decade ago and chapter marts 17-18 years ago?

They are a waste of time--I buy more killer stuff at home and over the phone than all the guys in total.

Right now the competition is fierce, whether it's Ebay, auctions or marts, it still comes down to 2 things Knowledge and how close you are willing to work. If you try to make more than 5 or 10% you are out of luck and you won't be competitive anywhere except for flukes. There are lots of guys out there that don't go to marts or aren't even members and they have plenty of dough and knowledge too. The supply is constrained with lots of shark eyeballs looking every where. When Jones- Horan started the bi monthly auctions there was a short time when you could actually buy some good deals, that ended fast. THe last 3 years was a tremendous opportunity to get good stuff on the cheap but that big supply has dried up. You need patience as well as passion to keep going and when to keep your powder dry waiting for the next deal. Geno

My father always used to say this. Thanks for the memory Jon.

A couple of points here. First, I still go to marts both to sell and to buy. It is not like it used to be but I still find great stuff at marts, especially now that a lot of older collectors, who have no internet skills, are selling out. Second, I still go to my local chapter meeting and regional marts and I do talk with other collectors and dealers about watches. So do a lot of collectors I know. One of my favorite things about going to regionals is gathering around Jim Haney's or the Freds' or Rhett's table...or my table and talking watches...telling stories...telling lies.

That begs the question:

In this new age - how does a new collector get himself in the right path, if according to you old-timers, everything is wrong with the hobby?

Pretty soon everything will be online, it will be more cost effective for most AH to do this. There is really no source of info for newer collectors to turn to - the price guide is considered by all the experienced collectors to be a joke. The current clubs are spreading misinformation, There are no more watchmakers, and the current group is not experienced enough in repairs - I could go on.

Any of you old-timers see any thing positive???

You only need to look at the surge in new memberships to answer that question.

I know for a fact 149 would/could help immensely if the notice of Chapter 149 wasn't so buried in the special interest listing!
