Jon

Yes, Richard wants to do a photo gallery of his watch papers. I would like to see these also.

In his original post though, Richard stated:

I have been photographing and harvesting photo's from the internet of American Watch Papers for many years and have a few thousand organized by State, by City, by Name. Most as you would expect are 19th century jewelers and retailers. Some are maker's watch papers, e.g. Goddard, Morse, Voight.

I'm glad to share.

I'm also glad to make them all available if we could figure out an easy way to put them on-line in a manner that allows us to add papers and contribute information (some, for example, are difficult to read). One issue we would need to think about is rights. As inferred, many of the pictures were downloaded from auction sites and eBay but perhaps as long as nothing is for profit and kept in our secured research area we're okay.

Not sure if there is enough interest in a project like this.

The other site you are talking about is not our secured research area.

Let me further investigate IP issues over the next couple of weeks. I've always been very careful to share for research purposes only, no commercialization. Unfortunately my photos are intermixed with those I've also downloaded. I'll also see if there is a way to separate the two which would reduce the numbers but eliminate any IP concerns.

I have 2000-3000 shots (some are front & back) that total 1-2 gigs. As said, they are organized on my pc in separate directories by State and then by City. Then each jpg or bmp is named for the retailer/jeweler/maker. I've used a rather simple naming convention so, for example, if I have pictures of the front and the back the file name would be something like:

"Luther Goddard 1A.jpg" (for the front)
"Luther Goddard 1B.jpg" (for the back)

If I have a second paper that has a different design or color, than that second Goddard paper would be named "Luther Goddard 2.jpg".

I found that this structure allowed me to easily search the files for maker names no matter where they worked, as well as investigate all makers within a particular location. As the database got bigger, I tried to standardize more - - never thought it would grow to be this large.

I think we are good but should have a use disclaimer to protect #149.
Easiest for me, due to size, would be to burn onto a couple of DVDs and send to you. Before that's done, can you help me understand how members will be able to access them and contribute to the database? Thanks, Rich
