I have a question about WW bands: aren't vintage gold wrist watches supposed to have brown bands?

??? Rolling Eyes

"Supposed" is a weird word. I like gold with black...I also like it with brown or tan. I have lots of leather, Crocodile and Alligator straps. I change them out quite a bit. I think the "proper" look is a matter of personal taste...and...I could give a rat's #SS about some traditional.... "supposed."

One more interesting thing. I have big wrists so I look on mart tables for NOS L long vintage watch straps. I looked through my collection after reading this and the majority of the black vintage bands have original gold colored buckles.

BTW, I am on a business trip. Today I am wearing dark gray wingtip shoes, and a black belt with my 18k yellow gold watch on a black strap. However, I also brought a pair of burgundy loafers and a burgundy belt for tomorrow. Now I am getting paranoid that my black watch strap will be ridiculed tomorrow. What should I do?

Confused Embarassed

Jon -

In the period literature advertising on vintage WW's you will see them offered with brown bands, YGF bracelets, and if you could afford it - gold bracelets.

Just keep in mind that 14ky was an American offering, and 18KY was usually Continental.

Black was considered dressier than brown, so you wont see them on everyday watches as often.

Yes, I agree. It is a matter of style, class and dress, i.e brown shoes , belt with brown or beige parts or suit. Back usually has silver buckles, belt buckle appointments.
