Also, many jewelers are ignorant of watches and their values--the higher the appraisal, the larger the fee.

Well, this person they are going back to is a Very Big dealer in watches in NYC - been around forever.

I guess they want to put him on the spot.

Sometimes "Big Dealers" have a specific customer in mind for a specific watch. Just because someone is willing to pay a "Big Dealer" more than the market value for a specific watch doesn't mean that the specific watch is "worth" what the "Big Dealer" can get.

If the "Big Dealer" pays over the market for this watch consider yourself lucky. There are a lot of watches out there and this one does not say "Waltham" on the movement. Cool Wink

My bet is that the owner simply want to find out what the value is so that they can divide up the spoils.

Faber is a WW guy; he knows nothing about pocket watches.

There is also often a big difference between

" What do you think it is worth "

. V

" How much will you give me for it "

This where most lay people get tripped up - they "think" that what it is worth IS
what they will get for it.

They also get tripped up when I ask them if they want the watch appraised for fair market value, OR replacement value? They think these values are the same.

What upsets me is my friend is a certified jewelry appraiser - she should have known better than to get involved with the NY Dealers.

She even asked me if she should take the watch to Antiquorum to have them auction it off for them. I said to her they have a 30% haircut, so even if you make more money on it, after premium and fees you are back to where you started.

Which is moot if you paid nothing for the watch (inherited), but why give up that much money??
