In the wrist watch world, at least here in the US there has been a steady upswing in the selling prices of the higher end of watches which some attribute to "The Hodinkee Effect". Hodinkee (loosely translated wristwatch from the Czech) is a website launched in 2008 by then 25-year-old Benjamin Clymer. "Hodinkee has grown into a robust online magazine featuring in-depth reviews, critiques, and reports on watches of a particularly high caliber".*

Here is a link to the Hodinkee site: http://www.hodinkee.com/

The Hodinkee website features articles on watches and manufacturers. They discuss both new and vintage watches. They have written and video interviews with collectors. They have a weekly feature called "What's Selling Where" which discusses usually 3 vintage watches which are for sale at some venue and which seem to be interesting and fashionable.

The website is always interesting and it has become influential enough that the major manufacturers give Mr Clymer and his staff a lot of access.

Now to the "The Hodinkee Effect"....It has become pretty much undeniable that that wristwatch prices are exploding and that in particular when Hodinkee talks about a particular watch there is a huge bump in the price.

Hodinkee just did a piece on the upcoming Bonhams Early American pocket watch auction. I think their point of view is a little bit odd...after all it comes from wrist watch people...but it is interesting. I would be surprised if some of the stockbrokers who read Hodinkee did not attend the Bonhams auction and the auction will get a bit of the "The Hodinkee Effect".

Here's the link to the Bonhams article: http://www.hodinkee.com/blog/on-the-block-masterpieces-of-american-watch-making-bonhams-new-york

I think we need to get Mr Clymer to interview a real pocket watch guy who would talk about why American watches are cool. What do you think?

* Quote from the Hodinkee site.

They do a better and better job all of the time. They know the trends and probably help make some of the trends.
